Signs Point to Yes

Tuesday, March 11, 2008
Read 1 Samuel 21:1 through 24:22.

(23:11) "Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down just as Your servant has heard? O LORD God of Israel, I pray, tell Your servant." And the LORD said, "He will come down." (NASB)

I can't resist a Magic-8 Ball. Do you remember those toys? You asked it a question of prediction, gave it a good shake, then held it up where you could read your answer in its window:

"Magic-8 Ball, will I get that promotion at work today?" "My sources say no."

"Magic-8 Ball, if I ask her out, will she say yes?" "Very doubtful."

"Magic-8 Ball, do I need to grow up and stop asking you about the direction of my life?" "Without a doubt."

It never ceases to amaze where people go for leading and what people take as signs for direction. I once heard a story about a boy needing to buy a car. One night while asleep he had a dream filled with vivid yellow colors. The next day he visited the local dealership and was drawn to the only yellow car on the lot. He bought it, convinced by his dream that it was what he should do. He had his yellow car... unfortunately it turned out to be a lemon.

Here's a novel idea from our text today. When we're wondering about things unfolding in our lives, we should ask God. This is not the first time David has asked of God, and not the first time God has responded. Friend, God is the same today, still the God who speaks. Have you heard his voice? At the very least have you seen Him respond with clear direction concerning what you've asked?

As God works in and around our lives and guides us through days that appear uncertain, in our attempts to join Him in what He's doing should we be more deliberate about asking direction of Him? "Signs point to yes."

The three secrets to successful ministry are prayer, prayer, and more prayer.
